I'm a neuroscientist and I think the reason the grid system is so appealing is because it easily allows you to see when symmetry is perturbed - Something the brain is hard wired to spot. For example it's the very slight asymmetry in peoples faces that can convey beauty, while images of faces that have been altered to be mirror images of one side are consistently flagged by peoples brains as less appealing.

There's a surprising amount of biology in web design when you think about it

I have been a big follower and supporter of the grid system. In fact, I have had plenty of discussions on my own Web site about it. From my discussions, most people find it to be somewhat of a rule that they don’t want to follow. Although after this Web site was released, the trend started to blow up even more, and people are now starting to support it. Seems interesting to me. Antonio did a great job with the Web site though! Thanks for listing it!

This layout can work for lists like the home page of the site you link to – however flowing content like paragraphs of text are a lot more difficult to layout like this since we don’t know the length each cell (in the grid) needs to be to accomodate the text. This is why websites use a columned layout with “cleared” rows, not strict spacing like in the example you show.
